I was afraid to use the electro-stim, but I turned it on to the first setting, and couldn’t feel a thing. I ended up going up to the seventh or eighth level by the time I was into using it, much more than I could take on my hand.

I’m guessing that because the inner 2/3 of your vag has way less nerve endings than your hand, you don’t feel the shock. Instead I felt a powerful clenching. It was an interesting orgasm. Instead of the involuntary clench I generally feel when I come, I was forced to clench more and harder by the electro-stim. Not sure if that’s exactly my preferred orgasm, but it’s definitely an interesting sensation.

I think the Intensity is a great tool for Kegels. It feels more like I’m clenching all the parts of my pelvic floor, whereas before I was maybe only clenching the bottom half, or not clenching as hard. It definitely shows you where to squeeze, and makes it easier and pleasurable, for us lazy Kegel girls.

My friend’s review of the Intensity makes me feel a little better…at least I know the electro-stim function doesn’t hurt. I am also very intrigued by the distinction she makes between orgasms being involuntary or forced. Subtle differentiations like this remind me how important it is to pay attention to the experience of orgasm…the more we reflect on the experience, the better we can communicate it and help fill in all of the information gaps in women’s health.

I still need more scientific evidence about the safety of electrostimulation before I use the Intensity on myself, but I’ve been reading and researching and look forward to summarizing the information for you soon!

Quite honestly the Intensity raises some questions that have rekindled my interest in the old buzz bizz. How do we know that internal electro-stimulation is safe, or that applying any kind of direct stimulation to the clitoris or sex organs doesn’t have adverse, long-term effects on sensory and reproductive ability?

The adult novelty industry, which is estimated to have an annual domestic revenue of $1 billion, doesn’t have an established standard for product safety and quality, nor is there an outside regulatory body to determine what those standards might be. Additionally, adult novelties are not subject to any form of government standards or regulations besides age restriction. While sex toy and vibrator manufacturers often go out of their way to “talk the talk” of sex toy health and safety, every sex toy package is marked with warning labels stating that the product is “sold as a novelty only” and “for external use only.” If manufacturers are making sure to relieve themselves of legal responsibility for their “novelty” product, it seems unlikely that there has been enough (or perhaps even any) research demonstrating that sex toys are indeed safe to use.

Intensity by Jopen: For external use only?

Before I subject my vagina to a series of electric shocks, I think I’ll do a little more research on Jopen’s new Intensity vibrator and the effects of vibrator use in general. What do you think?

The Conspiracy of Silence story emerged when two British documentarians were sent to investigate the closing of the Franklin Community Federal Credit Union in Omaha, Nebraska, from which Lawrence E. (Larry) King, a celebrated black republican political leader, was charged with embezzling almost $40 million. Conspiracy of Silence was produced by Yorkshire Television (UK) and was scheduled to air on the Discovery channel (US) on May 3, 1994. At the last minute, the documentary was pulled and was never broadcast in either Great Britain or the United States.

My research into this story has revealed consistency of information, but very little credibility or reliability in the sources. There is no Wikipedia entry on the documentary, and only a “stub” on the child sex slavery allegations. I have found a few books, academic explorations, websites, interviews, and articles, but they leave me unsatisfied, even accumulatively.

Were you aware of this “scandal” in 1994? Do you remember anything about Conspiracy of Silence being pulled from the Discovery channel, or of the related sex crime allegations? Do you think that a lack of publicity and information would have existed if the Larry King “scandal” was exposed in 2008, rather than 1988?

In my last blog I wrote about pornography as sex education. Specifically, I argued that pornography is the most effective sex education out there due to the shortcomings of conventional sex ed, as well as to the close proximity that the pornographic image has to reality.

Last night I came across a porn clip that fired up a comparable amount of intrigue. The video itself was nothing special–a heterosexual pro-am teaser directing viewers to a pay site. However, the content included a method of clitoral stimulation that I had never considered before:

Before seeing this clip on XVideos.com, this stimulation method had never occurred to me as a possibility. But now not only am I aware of it, I was given a demonstration of how it’s done. Skill-based learning from porn. I’ll be passing the lesson on to my future lovers, for sure!

I wanted to use the Evolved Croupier so bad that I bought it with my own money. This is no joke, as it cost about $70. Two things attracted me to this vibrator:

1. It’s uncanny resemblance to the slime in Ghostbusters II.

As we grow up and learn about sex, we do so without any real point of reference. We enter our first sexual encounter uncertain of how we should conduct ourselves. Rather, we jump into the backseat with the faith that we have listened to the right people and the right words, hoping that our biological impulses are strong enough to make up for the difference.

Unless, of course, we watch porn.

Pornography is the only demonstration of sex we ever get. It is the hard, visual confirmation of the soft, often implicated words and diagrams through which we formally learn about sex. It is the visual evidence that substantiates rumor and experience. Porn is our only model for comparison. It is our standard of truth.

Further, because any visual representation of sex is by definition pornographic, porn monopolizes our knowledge of sex.

In the way that all students speak the words of their teachers, we are all disciples of pornography. Our sexuality is pornographic because there is nothing else for it to be. In order to make sense of contemporary sexuality, we have to study pornography and its conventions. One such convention is a sex position called the reverse cowgirl (pictured below).

For the reverse cowgirl, the man and woman both face the same direction. woman sits on the man’s lap while he sits down. Both face forward in the same direction. The woman’s legs and pussy are spread wide and her torso and breasts are fully exposed. The man’s balls are visible and his penis alternates between hiding and visibility as it penetrates. Every body part of pornographic value is condensed on the screen (this position can also be used for hetero anal sex or with two male partners).

Although the reverse cowgirl succeeds in maximum visibility, assuming this position is not necessarily beneficial to those who are performing and aiming to feel sexual pleasure. The penis isn’t aligned with any especially erogenous zones (such as the g-spot). The partners can’t see each other’s bodies. It’s not comfortable to be in. It’s not easy to get in to.

How does this analysis of the reverse cowgirl can forward our understanding of the relationship between pornography and sexuality? In this world in which truth is equated with seeing, is there another way for us to learn about sex besides pornography?
